The Behavioural Science Lens
The Data Lens

Driving
engagement with data

The year was 1854. London had been reeling under the outbreak of cholera and Doctor John Snow (yes, a real life John Snow much before the Games of Thrones fictional one), was one of the tireless doctors treating an endless stream of patients even as he found himself asking questions about the real reason behind the spread of the disease. The common perception at that time was the cholera spread through air.

Data was being tracked at a district level and deaths being registered. Dr. Snow’s hypothesis was that cholera could spread through contaminated water. But his research found few believers. He needed a different way to bring the change in people’s perceptions and behaviour. Data helped. As Dr. Snow mapped out cases of cholera on the map of London, he found something curious. The cases were converging around one particular street. The investigations showed that this street indeed had a septic water tank which led to a large outbreak. One single chart conveyed what years of research had been trying to.

This information, presented in a powerful way, led to the septic tank being removed as a consequence.

Driving
engagement with Behavioral Science

10 people were killed everyday in Mumbai, India while trespassing railway tracks. It seemed as though these individuals, living in slums bordering the tracks, were careless when crossing. But why would any individual engage in a risky behaviour that can potentially result in their death? Seems irrational right?

Many months of research at these crossings, performing different kinds of analysis on the data obtained from authorities, and poring through academic literature, led to a eureka moment. The reason why individuals indulge in this risky behaviour is because human brains are poor at estimating speed of large fast moving objects. This means trespassers don’t have a death wish, they are just very confident that they will be able to make it to the other side safely!

Conventional wisdom would suggest an awareness program for commuters, much like the messaging on rear view mirrors - ‘Trains are faster than they appear. Be Careful’. Instead, the researchers painted bright ‘Yellow Lines’ on tracks near trespassing points. These yellow lines would served as a new reference point for trespassers to non-consciously estimate speed of trains more accurately. The solution led to 30-70% decline in fatalities across various trespassing points where the solution was implemented.
